Designed for travelers with limited time, our 2-Day Short Inca Trail offers an unforgettable experience of the most scenic and iconic section of the classic trek in just two days. Along the way, you’ll hike through stunning landscapes, explore remarkable Inca sites such as Wiñay Wayna, and connect with the rich history and culture of the Inca civilization.
Your journey begins with a scenic hike along the ancient trail, surrounded by lush mountains and breathtaking views. Along the route, you’ll have time to rest, enjoy your packed lunch, and fully appreciate the natural beauty of the Andes. As you approach the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate), you’ll witness your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu — a truly unforgettable moment.
Your adventure begins bright and early with a 4:00 am pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Enjoy a scenic journey of approximately one and a half hours to the charming town of Ollantaytambo, where we’ll board the first train to KM 104, the starting point of our trek. Along the way, you’ll be greeted by the stunning Andean mountains, fertile fields, and the Urubamba River, basking in the warm embrace of the morning sun.
Before the hike, you’ll have a brief orientation with your guide, a box lunch, and some snacks to enjoy later. The trek begins with a visit to the nearby archaeological site of Chachabamba, once a strategic guard post and checkpoint for the Inca Trail. Your guide will share fascinating insights into Incan history before you embark on the actual hike.
The trail continues for another 3 hours to the Wiñay Wayna Complex. As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by lush vegetation and towering mountains, offering breathtaking valley views. Wiñay Wayna is known for its impressive architecture, featuring a ritualistic water source, temples venerating natural forces, and agricultural terraces blending seamlessly with the mountains. This site offers a glimpse into the rich legacy of the Incas.
After exploring Wiñay Wayna, you’ll have time to relax and connect with Mother Nature. A little further along, you’ll arrive at a campsite on the Classic Inca Trail, where you’ll enjoy a tasty lunchbox and recharge your energies.
Next, we’ll continue hiking to the Sun Gate, where you’ll get your first panoramic view of the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. It’s a truly jaw-dropping experience, showcasing the ingenuity of the Incas. The enchanting landscape invites introspection into their profound connection with nature.
We’ll then head to the exit to take a bus to Aguas Calientes. Your hotel stay awaits, but first, you’ll enjoy a delectable dinner at one of the town’s top restaurants. Make sure to rest early, as you’ll be waking up at dawn for the next adventure.
After a well-deserved night’s rest, rise before sunrise to beat the crowds and prepare for an unforgettable day. Take a short walk from your hotel to catch a bus that will take you on a 25-minute drive to the entrance of the majestic Machu Picchu. Enter just before the sun comes up, casting a beautiful golden hue over this Wonder of the World.
Take a moment to soak it all in and snap your first photographs. Then, your guide will lead you on a two-hour tour of Machu Picchu, highlighting the most essential parts of the site and sharing the fascinating history and construction details of this ancient Incan citadel.
After the guided tour, you have the option to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (pre-booked tickets required). Each hike offers additional stunning views of the Inca city, with Huayna Picchu taking approximately 2 hours and Machu Picchu Mountain around 3 hours to hike up and down.
When you’re ready to leave, head back down to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have time to choose a restaurant for a bite to eat before catching your train. The train usually departs in the afternoon or evening (subject to availability). Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your transport will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation in Cusco.
Now it’s time to enjoy a thoroughly deserved rest and put your feet up. Your trip might be over, but the memories of this incredible adventure will stay with you for years to come.
